Pantone Colour of the Year 2017 Greenery Inspired Wedding Cake

When the gurus of all things colour Pantone announced their Colour of the Year 2017 was Greenery, I was super excited to see how this could be translated into the world of wedding cakes. A few of my industry friends collaborated on a live photoshoot which happened at The Bridal Affair's Wedding Affair at Kirkgate Market, Leeds, and I was thrilled to be asked to provide a cake, and what better style of cake than one which tied in with the theme of Greenery?! When I think of Greenery I think of foliage, freshness and liveliness, which I hope comes across in this cake. 2017 Wedding Cake Trends

Hi! So... it’s December and at this time of year I always get a bit reflective on the year that has gone by and start to feel excited about all the new projects lined up for the new year. I’ve started to think about what trends from the world of weddings will start to filter through to us cake makers, and these are my top 5...

1 – MARBLE

In keeping with the trend for all things industrial yet organic, marble looks to be big in 2017. It can be subtle or dramatic and is a great way to add some texture to your cake without it being too “in your face”. Team it with some whimsical sugar flowers to soften the look.

2 – NAKED OR SEMI-NAKED CAKES

These are never going to go out of fashion, and I for one am glad. They’re cakes for eating, for definite, and can be dressed in a variety of ways to suit almost any wedding. Sharp edges to the buttercream on the semi-naked cakes help to modernise the look of the cake, but either way these cakes look stunning, especially paired with fresh flowers.

3 – GREENERY

Sometimes all you need is some beautiful foliage to really set off your scheme. A few olive leaves here, cascade of tropical sugar leaves there, sugar succulents on your cake – there are so many options and this can often work out cheaper than having the more expensive blooms on your cake.

4 – METALLICS

My favourite trend of the moment (rose gold has to be the most beautiful colour out there!). Ideal for adding a touch of luxe to your cake, be it in silver or gold or go modern with copper, rose gold or bronze. Ask your cake maker to use lustre for a subtle sheen or go all out with sequins and gold or silver leaf for a dramatic yet luxurious look. Use toppers to bring in the colours for a more subtle nod to the trend.

5 – FLORAL

Floral wedding dresses are set to be big in 2017 and this style could easily be incorporated into your wedding cake. Whether it’s handpainted watercolour detail, sugar flowers or beautiful fresh florals, flowers are an essential part of any wedding and are a stunning addition to your wedding cake.

I am still seeing my brides wanting cakes with elegant lace detailing and dessert tables are starting to get more popular too – I mean, why have one cake when you can have three, plus some macarons, cookies, cupcakes etc? Whatever style of cake you go for, make sure it’s what you as a couple envisage for your day. This is YOUR day, so have your cake (and eat it!) however you’d like.
