2017 Wedding Cake Trends

Hi! So... it’s December and at this time of year I always get a bit reflective on the year that has gone by and start to feel excited about all the new projects lined up for the new year. I’ve started to think about what trends from the world of weddings will start to filter through to us cake makers, and these are my top 5...

1 – MARBLE

In keeping with the trend for all things industrial yet organic, marble looks to be big in 2017. It can be subtle or dramatic and is a great way to add some texture to your cake without it being too “in your face”. Team it with some whimsical sugar flowers to soften the look.

2 – NAKED OR SEMI-NAKED CAKES

These are never going to go out of fashion, and I for one am glad. They’re cakes for eating, for definite, and can be dressed in a variety of ways to suit almost any wedding. Sharp edges to the buttercream on the semi-naked cakes help to modernise the look of the cake, but either way these cakes look stunning, especially paired with fresh flowers.

3 – GREENERY

Sometimes all you need is some beautiful foliage to really set off your scheme. A few olive leaves here, cascade of tropical sugar leaves there, sugar succulents on your cake – there are so many options and this can often work out cheaper than having the more expensive blooms on your cake.

4 – METALLICS

My favourite trend of the moment (rose gold has to be the most beautiful colour out there!). Ideal for adding a touch of luxe to your cake, be it in silver or gold or go modern with copper, rose gold or bronze. Ask your cake maker to use lustre for a subtle sheen or go all out with sequins and gold or silver leaf for a dramatic yet luxurious look. Use toppers to bring in the colours for a more subtle nod to the trend.

5 – FLORAL

Floral wedding dresses are set to be big in 2017 and this style could easily be incorporated into your wedding cake. Whether it’s handpainted watercolour detail, sugar flowers or beautiful fresh florals, flowers are an essential part of any wedding and are a stunning addition to your wedding cake.

I am still seeing my brides wanting cakes with elegant lace detailing and dessert tables are starting to get more popular too – I mean, why have one cake when you can have three, plus some macarons, cookies, cupcakes etc? Whatever style of cake you go for, make sure it’s what you as a couple envisage for your day. This is YOUR day, so have your cake (and eat it!) however you’d like.

Five Tier Naked Cake with Sunflowers

Hayley and James are one of the nicest couples ever, and I was thrilled when Hayley's mum initially got in touch to chat about their wedding cake.

They opted for a five tier lemon and vanilla naked cake decorated with fresh sunflowers and berries. It went perfectly with their room setting, which they decorated themselves! Huddersfield Golf Clib at Fixby is a beautiful venue for a wedding too.

Three Tier Naked Cake with Fresh Flowers

This weekend saw Rachael marry her other half at the beautiful Whitley Hall Hotel in Sheffield. This place is stunning, and even has it's own peacock which my 4 year old assistant on delivery day loves!

Rachael's florist, Love Lili & Coco Floral (www.facebook.com/LoveLiliandCoCoFloral) provided the most gorgeous roses, lysanthus, freesias and gypsophelia for me to decorate the cake with - how pretty?! I then added some fresh summer berries and grapes. The cake was orange, lemon and vanilla flavours and looked and smelled delicious.

Massive congratulations to Rachael and her new husband! x

PS - This is what happens when your daughter likes to photobomb cake shots... Cheeky or what?!

Four Tier Cascading Roses and Peonies Wedding Cake

We delivered Lucy's wedding cake to The Rock Hotel, Broad Carr, Halifax. It's a lovely venue with really friendly helpful staff - definitely one to check out if you're thinking of getting married in the area :)

Lucy had asked for a cascade of sugar flowers tumbling down her cake in shades of purple, lilac, whites and ivories, so this is what we came up with

Beautiful venue decor by the amazing Angela and her team at West Yorkshire Wedding Company x

Ivory and Navy Wedding Cake by White Rose Cake Design

I was contacted by my beautiful bride well over a year ago to book this cake in. She had seen a design by Ben the Cake Man (www.benthecakeman.co.uk) and wanted me to recreate it, so I had a go!

Featuring our signature sugar roses, this cake consisted of rich fruit cake, chocolate and Baileys, vanilla and another rich fruit cake tier. Delicately iced in navy with a quilted design and ivory icing, this cake made a stunning centrepiece.

We delivered it to the Huntsman Inn in Holmfirth.

Five Tier Semi-Naked Drippy Wedding Cake with Macarons

This is a cake I created for a lovely couple, Rich and Natalie. They had seen a design online by Anges de Sucre and asked if I could create something similar, so I had a go! Five tiers of cake finished in a semi-naked style, topped with chocolate ganache drips and decorated with different flavours of macarons in different pastel shades.

Macarons are not my favourite things in the world, and more ended up in the bin than on the cake, but they taste AMAZING! They'd be fabulous wedding favours :)

This cake was delivered to the beautiful East Riddlesden Hall in Keighley, which is a stunning venue for anyone wanting a rustic barn-style wedding. They even have ducks! :) x
